The Smallest Garden I Have Ever Attempted
When I moved to Centreville, I knew it would be an adjustment to live in suburbia. Gone would be the days of walking out the back door a hearing nothing but the sound of the tree frogs and crickets. But in place of these things I had come to love, there would be the convience of living 3.2 miles from where I work (opposed to the over 20), the convience of being walking distance from a grocery store, and the joy of hearing Boeing 747 airplanes landing 4 miles away at the international airport. I thought I would have to give up having a garden in the process as well, as I had done the previous years while at school, but that wasn't completely the case.
The townhouse I am renting happens to have a litlte backyard which I have managed to turn a corner of into a little raised bed. Jacob was kind enough to bring up a load of top soil from back home when he was in the area to pick up his new motorcycle. So I now have a 2m x 2.5m piece of open soil to experiment with. Unfortunately, it's on the northeast side of the house, so it only gets sun until midday. I, none the less, have high hopes of growing some Spring crops, and figure what I don't have in intense sun and size, I can make up for with an absrbent amount of TLC. We'll see how it works out!
After mixing in some grass clipings from last year and turning the ground a couple of times over the winter, I have sone in carruts, peas, brocolli and a few beat plants. They all went in on March 8th, and are starting to bud now. It's exciting to be back into gardening once again.
The Brocolli is at the head of the race:
The beats are starting to come up as well:
